THE SLOW SUPERHER0

TSS COVER

Book Name: The Slow Superhero

Author: Sarah Surgey

Published by: Ventorros Press

Publication Date: 18th April 2022

Once upon a time, there was a little girl, Maud She wants to race through the day as fast as she can, be the first, see the most, be the best. It's hard when she realises that we can't always be number one.

Until one day when she goes into the forest and meets a Tree. He stays in one place yet continues to grow - he sees all and becomes very wise.

Tree helps Maud to understand that you

"Can still be SUPER you can still have POWERS

but slowing down increases the hours"

As Maud thinks back over her day she realises that in the moments that she took to slow down, she saw things she would not normally see in the day! And Tree wisely points out..

"Then you collected a story that would have gone

untold because you slowed down for a moment and took in the world"

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

This was the most exciting part of this project.

Maud is a little girl who wants to race through the day because she wants to be as fast as her favourite superhero.

So Me and Sarah both wanted to give a tomboy look to Maud, who loves to climb tree. She spends her time with "The Tree". She is always very curious and in the same time she is very confused and not really happy with her situations.

So we decided to use dungaree as it goes very well with the character's personality, and with curly, untidy hair. She must have big glasses.

I wanted Maud look very grounded with lots of curiosity in her eyes.

VISUAL DEVELOPMENT

Author and the publisher both wanted the double page spread illustrations for the entire book. So We have created a total of 21 spread illustrations for the entire book.

For each spread I have created a number of rough sketches in thumbnail and then selected one for the final sketch that I have shared with Sarah and the publisher.

After that I have created  several colour thumbnails for each spread and created a perfect colour palette for final illustration. I have created a colour scrip initially to maintain the overall tone of the book.

COVER
VARIATIONS

These are few cover options that I have created for this project

The 1st one was the initial cover, that I have prepared for the book promotional purpose. This was very much accepted by the Author and the publisher and we received lots of complement for this cover.

Though the 1st cover was well accepted by everyone, for me it is not at all suitable for this book. I felt that the cover illustration is not conveying the message that we wanted to give in this book. Then I have prepared two cover variations with the concepts that were in my mind for this book. Though the publisher liked the 2nd cover variation more than the final one, Me and Sarah both selected the 3rd variation (the final one) as it is exactly portraying the message of this book. So the publisher has selected the 2nd variation as the inside book cover for THE SLOW SUPERHERO.

STORYBOARD

I always prepare the storyboard for the children's book project. It helps to maintaining the cohesive look of the entire project very much.

First I prepared all the sketches and then shared with the publisher and author for their approval. I was very happy that they liked all the sketches for this book. After that I started the colouring, which is the most satisfying part of the project to me.  But before starting the final colour I have created the colour script for the entire project.
